(Preparing Yourself for An Adverse Action)

Set up a meeting with your Human Resources office   Discuss retirement, Reduction in Force (RIF); look at your personnel file, other records, etc. Be prepared! Know what you want to find out.
Verify your service computation date (SCD)   Make sure it is correct -important during RIF
Review and update your official personnel file   Make sure it contains an accurate history of your service, other non-USGS federal work. Should be located in your Human Resources Office
Know which retirement system you are in and get pre-retirement training   CSRS, FERS, FERS offset, etc. - There are important things to do before retirement even if you have many years left.
Make sure your health insurance meets your current needs.
Veterans should have a copy of their DD-214 and their military pay   Being a vetern has effects during a RIF. Buying back your military time may mean a higher annutiy. Check with Human Resources

Write a good resume    
Attend local union meetings to keep up to date
Peruse Federal jobs
On your own time and using your own resources, write your Congressional Representatives
